My father came to America from China to attend college in the late 1950s. His alma mater was in the South, where he was technically a ‘colored person.’ The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing and segregationists were fighting tooth and nail for their old way of life. It was against this backdrop that he married a white, Southern woman. My dad never really talked about that time of his life. I can only imagine what it must have been like for him in those days. I was never able to talk to my mom about it. She died in a car accident the summer before I entered the second grade.
